How does it work and how the 48-teams will qualify for the tournament ?
For World Cup 2026 will qualify 48 Teams worldwide as follow:
AFC (Asian Football Confederation) – 8 teams set for direct qualification
Let’s begin with Asian Football Confederation which is the biggest populated confederation, with a record 8 teams set for direct qualification and a further berth possible via the Play-off Tournament.

Teams through to the third round of qualifying: Australia, IR Iran, Iraq, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan (6)

Teams eliminated: Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Guam, Hong Kong, Laos, Macau, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan (15)
CAF ( Confederation of African Football) – 9 teams for direct qualification
Africa’s preliminary tournament began on 15 November 2023.
The 53 CAF countries will conclude in 8 groups of 6 teams and one group of five, following Eritrea’s withdrawal, with each of the group winners qualifying automatically for the World Cup 26.
The 4 best group runners-up will qualify to a play-off stage.
CONCACAF ( The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football )

Automatically qualified nations: Canada, Mexico, USA (3)

Teams eliminated: US Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands (2)
Co-hosts Canada, Mexico and USA all are atomically qualified, leaving three direct slots and a potential further 2 via the Play-off Tournament up for grabs in Concacaf.
CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) – 6 teams for direct qualification
CONMEBOL qualifying commence on 7 September 2023 and will end in September 2025.
Ten teams are competing in a single league format and play each other home and away. The best 6 teams will qualify automatically for the World Cup, with the seventh-placed side entering the FIFA Play-Off Tournament.
OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) -1 teams guaranteed for direct qualification
For the very first time, Oceania will have a guaranteed qualification spot for the World Cup, as well as a second second slot via the Play-off Tournament.
UEFA (The Union of European Football Associations) – 16 teams guaranteed for direct qualification
Europe’s qualifying competition is scheduled to begin in March 2025 and conclude in March 2026.
The first round will follow a familiar format, with 12 groups of 4 or 5 teams, and the section winners securing World Cup slots.
The 12 teams will be drawn into three play-off paths for one-off semi-finals and a final.
The three path winners qualify for the World Cup.
